Area Maior beach is a stunning site that comprises: Monte Louro Mountain, beach, dunes, intertidal zone and fresh lake. It is popular for two main reasons: chosen by the Galician people as the best beach in Galicia and chosen by the Galician government as one of the most important wetlands in the region. This protected area (included in the Red Nature 2000) offers an indisputable ecological and scenic value as well as giving the opportunity of enjoying leisure activities, such as: windsurfing, surfing, kite-surfing, bird-watching or walking its 1.8 km length. Natura 2000 is the centrepiece of EU nature & biodiversity policy. It is an EU wide network of nature protection areas established under the 1992 Habitats Directive. The aim of the network is to assure the long-term survival of Europe’s most valuable and threatened species and habitats.
